Ana’s’Locks of Love
Published: December 18, 2005
For all the reasons of the season, it’s no question that children look forward to this time of year with more than a little enthusiasm.
Though, even a child is aware that there’s more to Christmas than just getting presents. They will sometimes display a level of humanity that will humble even the most altruistic character.
Last year, little Ana Schurr was at the Winfield Crooked Creek Days and heard about an organization called Locks of Love. Ana asked her mother Sara what it was all about.
Sara explained that sometimes when kids are sick and need treatment, they lose their hair. Locks of Love uses donated hair to make hairpieces for young people who are suffering from hair loss due to any number of illnesses. The concept made a lasting impression on Ana.
While mother and daughter were out shopping last June they came across a little girl, struggling with an illness that had taken all of her hair. Ana’s heart went out to her as she turned to Sara and asked, “Mommy, if I give my hair away, do you think that little girl might get it?” Her mother simply replied, “If not her, than it will be some other little girl just like her.” Ana determined from that moment to grow out her hair and donate it to Locks of Love.
Sara made an appointment for Ana on Wednesday at Headlines Hair Design, owned and operated by Kevin Wagler. At a little after 5:30 p.m. a very determined Ana and arrived at Headlines, finally ready to say goodbye to her silky blond locks. After she climbed into the tall salon chair, Ana turned to the mirror and took one last look at the gift she had been holding onto for so many months. Wagler took up his scissors, and with the tiniest hint of a cringe from Ana, made the first snip. Ana’s smile grew bigger and bigger the more Wagler cut away, and excitement began to build for the new look and the satisfaction of completing her pursuit.
When Wagler had finally finished, Ana’s perfect little heart shaped face was framed with a brand new do. Sara, who had been watching anxiously exclaimed, “Oh my! She looks like she’s 16. Daddy and Seth and Mike aren’t going to believe it!” Ana beamed and blushed and thanked Wagler before jumping down from the chair and hurrying to her mother’s side. Ana’s gift had finally been given. When asked what she would like Santa to bring her for Christmas, Ana just shook her head and whispered, “Nothing,” with a shy smile. “You don’t want Santa to bring you coal for your stocking and snowman poo do you?” teased Sara. Ana vigorously shook her head and her stylish new bob swirled freely about her head.
Ana plans to keep growing her hair out and giving it to Locks of Love. She certainly won’t have to worry about coal in her stocking for years to come. Now diamonds on the other hand…
