Bikers set to saddle-up for charity

Published: December 16, 2005

TASMANIA’S famous motorised charity event, the Toy Run, kicks into gear today with plenty of two-wheeled horsepower and big-hearted donations.

In one of the best known events on the motorcycling calendar, thousands of riders collect toys during a run that starts in the state’s North-West and ends in Hobart.

The Motorcycle Riders Association Toy Run is always popular, attracting 7400 riders last year and watched by thousands of onlookers along the way.

Even the threat of dismal weather hardly deters many of the riders.

However, the event has struggled in recent years to come up with the thousands of dollars needed to keep it on the road, such as covering insurance costs.

A few months ago, MRA state president Chris Cook said that for the first time in its 26 years, the event was seriously under threat.

That was until a variety of donations enabled it to saddle-up again in the name of charity.

Yesterday, MRA vice-president Mark “Spanner” Hines said it was a year-round battle to fund the event.

“It has got to the stage where we sort of think every year that it could be the last one, especially with public liability insurance costs,” he said.

Toys collected on the ride, many of which make the trip prominently strapped to the bikes, will be given to the Salvation Army for distribution statewide.

And money raised at the Titan Bike & Trike bike and car expo, being held in conjunction with the Toy Run at the Royal Hobart Showgrounds, will be donated to Camp Quality.

The Titan expo will also host the official post-Toy Run party.
