Baby tossed from three stories high in a desperate rescue
Published: December 16, 2005
A young mother, Tracinda Foxe, 30. and her new born, Eric Guzman, were inside her 3rd floor apartment when the apartment filled with smoke from a fire in the kitchen. Tracinda who could not access the front door to escape, screamed for help from her bedroom window. She bent the window guards to make space, wrapped the baby in towel and started shouting for help. Five housing workers gathered below her window ready to catch what she had in her hands when she tossed the baby down.
Felix Vasques, 39, a New York Housing Authority supervisor and former lifeguard made the miracle catch of a lifetime. Father of three, Felix said he did not know what the woman was tossing until he grabbed the baby. He grabbed the baby like a football and gave the soot covered baby CPR. The baby coughed and started crying. Felix said he is glad he was at the right time at the right place. Felix happens to be a catcher on his local baseball team.
The weeping mother told reporter that she was too scared and she prayed, “God, please save my son. I prayed that someone would catch him and save his life.”
Moments after Foxe tossed baby Eric, New York firefighters D.J. Martin and Bobby Eustace rescued her from the burning apartment. Mother and son were treated at a hospital and were released soon. They both are doing well.
