Mother and baby escape arson fire
Published: December 15, 2005
A mother and her 15-month-old baby have been rescued from a fire in County Down which police say was arson.
Fire crews were called to Lisnabreen Walk in Bangor after 0100 GMT on Thursday. Two men were also rescued.
Firefighters found the woman trapped along with her baby in an upstairs flat which was full of smoke.
Meanwhile, eight people have been led to safety from a fire in a block of flats at Tollgate House in Bradbury Place in south Belfast.
In the Bangor incident, firefighters used a ladder to carry the baby out. The mother and two men who were in other flats in the building were led to safety.
The Fire Service said although smoke alarms were fitted they had failed to go off. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
A spokesman said the woman had listened to the advice of firefighters and had been able to be rescued.
‘React to alarms’
Meanwhile, the Bradbury Place fire is believed to have started accidentally at about 0500 GMT on Thursday.
The fire started in a second floor flat. Residents were alerted by a fire alarm, but dense smoke meant some were unable to find the fire exit.
John Langtry from the Fire Service said people needed to be aware of their surroundings and have an escape plan in the event of fire.
“It is vital for everybody, at anytime of the year - but especially over the festive season - to react to alarms,” he said.
“People are maybe staying away from home, staying in a strange place, and they need to know what the alarm is and then have a plan.
“The people who survive are the people who have a plan.”
