Donations Pour Into Burglarized Charity

Published: December 15, 2005

Hundreds of donations have poured into a Central Coast charity that was hit by burglars earlier this week.

Just a day after thousands of dollars in gifts and donations were stolen from the Valley Churches United Mission in Ben Lomond, the community responded in a big way.

“When they saw us in need, and you broadcast it, they gave immediatly, just like we give immediately,” Valley Churches United’s Annette Marcum said.

The mission’s Valley Christmas Project has been giving for nearly 25 years — collecting and wrapping holiday gifts for less fortunate families.

For high school senior Alyssa Bruni, the burglary hit close to home. The charity helped her family through a rough time.

“I used to be one of those kids who received Christmas presents and cans from Valley Churches. It was just something close to my heart. I was not happy to hear what happened, so we did something about it,” Bruni said.

Bruni said she got friends together and started asking classmates and local businesses to chip in. More than $500 was raised.

Volunteer said they are excited about the support they’ve received.

People have dropped off cash, checks and electronics to make sure children don’t go without this holiday.

“It looks like we will hopefully be able to recover. We’ll know that in the next two days as the rest of the stockings are filled,” Marcum said.

The gifts will be given out on Sunday.

To keep something like this from happening again, organizers a security system has been donated anonymously to the charity.

Meanwhile, police continue to search for those responsible for the burglary.
