A Walking Miracle

Published: December 15, 2005

It was an emotional afternoon at a Valley nursing home.

Occupational Therapy patients from the Woodrow Wilson Rehab Center came to Waynesboro’s Avante Nursing Home bearing gifts. Inside the bags were baked goods the patients made for the seniors. But one senior received an even bigger gift. Mrs. Hanckel saw her daughter Wilma walk for the first time in eight weeks. Hanckel was paralyzed from injuries sustained after a fall, but Wednesday, she walked to her mother and gave her the homemade treats.

“It was just amazing,” says Wilma Hanckel. “It was wonderful to see the tears in her eyes. I was just so glad I could walk to her. I’ll keep on walking to her.”

Hanckel graduates from the rehab center Friday.
