Fire rescue of mother-to-be

Published: December 10, 2005

A pregnant woman and her two-year-old son were rescued by firefighters from their blazing Shrewsbury home today, hours after fire gutted a house in the grounds of Attingham Park.

Fire chiefs in Shropshire today said the county was lucky it was not waking up to a “tragic loss of life” following the two major fires.

The mother and son were rescued from a second floor bedroom at 4.40am.

They were woken by smoke detectors when the fire took hold at their home in York Road, Harlescott, but could not escape down the stairs and became trapped by thick smoke.

Firefighters used a ladder to rescue the pair, who suffered smoke inhalation and were taken to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.

The blaze happened just hours after an earlier fire gutted the first floor and part of the roof in a two-storey home in the grounds of Attingham Park, Atcham. No smoke detectors had been fitted.

Fire chiefs, who described the Atcham blaze as “extremely severe”, said the two occupants had been awake when the fire broke out and managed to escape and raise the alarm.

It took more than an hour to bring the fire, which started at about 11.20pm, under control.

It is believed to have been started by an electrical fault in equipment in an airing cupboard.
