Scientists reveal an MS breakthrough

Published: December 9, 2005

RESEARCHERS from Edinburgh University have made a breakthrough in understanding crippling diseases such as multiple sclerosis.

The scientists have discovered why diseases such as MS attack a protective layer which surrounds the body’s nervous system.

A team led by Professor Peter Brophy of the Centre for Neuroscience Research at the University has discovered key molecules associated with the protective layer and the way nerves communicate with other organs in the body.

The team’s discoveries may lead to new ways to treat patients with the debilitating neurological condition.
