Woman rescued from apartment fire
Published: December 8, 2005
A 27-year-old woman was rescued from a Bellevue apartment fire Monday night, preventing her likely death from smoke inhalation.
Firefighters were summoned by an automatic fire alarm at 9:12(p.m. to the Espana Apartments, 14246 S.E. Sixth St. When they arrived, neighbors at a second-floor apartment said they had heard a smoke alarm sounding for about 20 minutes but didn’t know if anyone was in the unit.
Firefighters knocked on the front door, got no answer, and then used a ladder to enter through an unlocked sliding door on a second-story balcony, said Capt. Bill Larson.
The firefighters found thick smoke throughout the unit and discovered food had been left on a stove. The fire had gone out and a search was begun for a woman who lived in the apartment; she was found unconscious under a pile of clothes in the master bedroom by Firefighter Tobias Burns.
The woman regained consciousness outside and was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle for treatment of smoke inhalation. Paramedics said she probably would have died if she hadn’t been found.
