Stranded dolphins returned to sea

Published: December 8, 2005

FIVE dolphins stranded on the south-west coast of Western Australia have been rescued and released back into deep water.
Three striped dolphins became stranded on a Dunsborough beach late yesterday and were encouraged to deeper water.

The three dolphins returned to the beach, with another two dolphins, early today.

The dolphins were today taken to deeper water, via boat, by the department of Conservation and Land Management (CALM) after a check up by a vet.

CALM manager Greg Mair said one of the dolphins had been injured but was well enough to be released.

“Striped dolphins can be temperamental to handle and have a tendency to thrash violently and occasionally stress quickly to the point of death,” he said.

“So it is a relief that these dolphins were conveyed to deeper water without further trauma.”

An air search has been planned for tomorrow to ensure the dolphins have not returned to the shallow water.
