Christmas miracle for City Mission

Published: December 8, 2005

A little miracle happened in Wanganui yesterday.

A gift of $1500 may not seem a miracle to some, but for Wanganui City Missioner Shirley-Joy Barrow the amount was unexpected and means nothing will have to be skimped on for this year’s Christian Social Services Christmas dinner, despite the ticket price being cut to $2.

“This exactly covers the expected shortfall. This is a little miracle,” a delighted Rev Barrow said when Jackie Searancke and Steve Farr, on behalf of New Zealand Post, gave her the donation yesterday.

Rev Barrow said she recently decided the usual ticket price of $5 to $6 was too high for some people and meant they and their children were missing out on a Christmas dinner.

“I decided to have just one ticket price – $2 – but I had no idea how we would make up the shortfall. We expect about 300 adults and children and this amount means New Zealand Post is sponsoring the Christmas dinner.

“It’s a real Christmas blessing to the community.” [Random Acts of Kindness]

Mrs Searancke, New Zealand Post’s delivery business leader for Manawatu-Wanganui, and Mr Farr the delivery leader for Wanganui, said they were pleased so many people would benefit from the donation.

Rev Barrow noted the donation was one of three really unexpected events this year. The others were getting a replacement CCS van after the existing one was written off in an accident, and an out of the blue gift of a Lada car for the City Missioner.

Having the Lada as the “City Mission Limo” meant she could now make appointments without worrying if the CCS vehicle would be available.
