Woman and Dog Rescued from Frozen Lake
Published: December 6, 2005
Rescue crews scrambled to save a woman who plunged through the ice into a frigid lake Tuesday morning. Chopper 7 was live over the scene, and captured the dramatic rescue.
According to officials, the woman headed out onto the thin ice in order to save her dog, which had fallen through. But when she tried to rescue the animal, she also fell in.
The woman’s husband tried to rescue her, and when he couldn’t, neighbor Paul Amell came to her aid.
Amell recounted the harrowing story, explaining, “There is a piece of wood docking that floats by my dock. I scooted that out to the lake. She fell through, grabbed the dog, and luckily she had that piece of floating wood a little bit. She has a paddle boat we went and broke away from the ice, and scooted that out. From there we just pulled her out, but she was more concerned with her dog’s welfare than her welfare, I think. All she cared about was her dog.”
Cindy Dombrowski lives in the area of Duck Lake. She also has dogs, but explained, “My first alternative would be to run home and get some help, because, it’s just very dangerous out there.”
“All she cared about was her dog,” Amell said. “She kept saying, ‘Save the dog! Save the dog! Get the dog!’ The whole time she wouldn’t let go of the dog, the whole time we were trying to pull her out.”
According to officials, the dog was also rescued from the icy lake.
