Cancer researcher nominated for award

A medical researcher who has spent 15 years developing a cervical cancer vaccine is Queensland’s nominee for Australian of the Year 2006.
Professor Ian Frazer has been researching the cause of cervical cancer for 20 years and has spent the past 15 developing a vaccine to combat the disease which affects 500,000 women each year.
His vaccine is now in the final stages of research and worldwide trials show it prevents infection and reduces pap smear abnormalities by 90 per cent.
Warren Pearson, national director of the National Australia Day Council said Professor Frazer had created two types of vaccines, one to prevent infections, the other to treat existing infections.
Together, they have the potential to virtually eradicate cervical cancer within a decade.
“Ian’s pioneering research work makes him a very worthy recipient for the Queensland Australian of the Year Award,” Mr Pearson said.
“He is certainly an Australian who makes us proud.”
Prof Frazer’s name will be put forward for the Australian of the Year award.
The winner will be announced in Canberra on January 25, the eve of Australia Day.
