Woman survives freak road accident

Published: December 2, 2005

A young woman on her way to have lunch with friends can thank her lucky stars that she is alive.

This is according to emergency rescue services who treated the 23-year-old after a large piece of metal was launched into the windscreen of her car while she was travelling in Umhlanga Rocks near the KwaMashu off ramp.

Netcare 911’s Chris Botha said the metal looked like a tripod that is usually used to jack up cars when tyres need to be changed.

“The metal was lying on the road and got caught up in the wheel of the car travelling in the fast lane in front of her. It then shot up and went right through the windscreen, hitting her straight in the face, chest and on her arm,” he said.

“She sustained a fracture to her breastbone and had nasty lacerations on her head.” Botha said it was an “absolute miracle” that she was still alive. [Small Miracles: Extraordinary Coincidences from Everyday Life]

“She also sustained minor spinal injuries and she had to be stabilised at the scene before she was transported to Umhlanga Hospital,” said Botha.

He said that the young woman was in a lot of pain but managed to control her car and not crash into anything.

In another accident on the M13 on Wednesday 10 people were injured when a car crashed head on into a bakkie carrying labourers.

It is believed that the car went through a stop street and hit the bakkie on the Durban- bound lane near the Kloof off-ramp.

“The driver of the car hit his head against the windscreen and sustained serious head and spinal injuries.

“The driver hit into the steering wheel with such force that it broke,” said Botha. “He was taken out of his car after being put into a spinal immobilisation device.

“His wife and daughter, who were also in the car sustained minor injuries.”

The driver of the bakkie escaped unhurt and the seven labourers who were travelling on the back of his bakkie all sustained minor injuries. They were taken to St Augustine’s Hospital for medical attention.
