Two-Legged Dog Getting By, Getting Help

Published: December 2, 2005

Kandu (can doo) is a dog with a “can-do” attitude.

The dog was born without any front legs and an animal shelter in Colorado is trying to help him lead a more normal life.

Kandu manages to get around pretty well. He scoots across the floor on his chest and his back legs are very strong.

Experts at the Colorado Professional Medical usually work on prosthetics for people. They’re also using their expertise to help animals. [Animal ER: Extraordinary Stories of Hope and Healing from One of the World’s Leading Veterinary Hospitals]

Martin Kaufman is working on two devices to help the dog. One is a chest pad to keep Kandu’s chest from getting rug burns or abrasions from the floor.

The other is a ball rolling device to help him eventually get around outside.

Kandu also needs a new home. Somebody left him at the Evergreen Animal Shelter and they are looking for a family to adopt him.

Kandu can’t go up and down stairs and they don’t want him to jump from any heights because he may get hurt.

But he loves to be held. The shelter says he would be good to take to nursing homes or hospitals because he is so friendly.

Kandu should be fitted with his new devices by Christmas and will be available for adoption when he gets used to them. [Good Owners, Great Dogs]

Carts have helped some dogs with missing hind legs walk. But there was nothing to help dogs like Kandu, until now.
