Teens honored for being 911 heroes

Published: December 2, 2005

Two girls were honored Wednesday for being 911 heroes, KMBC’s Donna Pitman reported.

Dana Wonder called 911 after a man flashed her and her friends. Because of her call, the suspect was caught.

“It makes me feel good. Someone else may not have to go through this, and he isn’t going to try to do something worse than that,” Wonder said.

Ashley Coleman, 11, made a phone call that may have saved her father’s life. In September, her dad, who is a diabetic, passed out while driving. The girl called 911 and told them where they were. “He’s falling asleep and I don’t want him driving,” Ashley Coleman told 911. “And I have a little sister in the back.”

The 11-year-old said she used her faith to remain calm.

“I prayed God would help him pull over so we could get help,” Ashley Coleman said.

Paramedics were able to revive Ashley’s father, Brian Coleman.

“Something bad could have happened. She made something good out of something bad,” Brian Coleman said.

The two girls were honored Tuesday by the Mid-America Regional Council for their actions.
