Tim Winter and Adam Steffes tried to rescue the loon Wednesday by cutting a runway in the ice that was forming on the lake. But after the loon didn’t leave, they pulled it from the water on Thursday.
“We couldn’t see any visible injuries, but it wasn’t going anywhere,” Winter told the St. Cloud Times.
Linda Peck, a wildlife rehabilitator from Rockville, said the loon would go to the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in Roseville, where it will be examined to see if it suffers from lead or mercury poisoning, other illness or injury.
If possible, the center will release the loon so it can migrate, Peck said.
If the bird requires more help, it will be sent to a veterinarian in Garrison, near Lake Mille Lacs, she said.
