A West Auckland parking warden is being hailed as a hero by police after he tackled a knife-wielding man who had just stabbed three people.
Kevan Bruce Newman, 65, was stabbed to death on a busy Henderson street shortly after two store workers were attacked in a fishing tackle shop in Henderson just after 1pm on Monday.
Pes Fa’aui tackled the attacker, who continued to advance on police even after being shot a number of times. [Everyday Heroes : Inspiring Stories of Ordinary People Who Made a Difference]
Before he became a parking warden Fa’aui says he considered joining the police force and has enormous respect for everyone working in the emergency services.
Fa’aui has five stitches in his hand and has been given the rest of the week off work. He is likely to be honoured for his bravery by Waitakere City Council.
The accused knife man underwent surgery in hospital on Monday and is charged with assault.
Police say more charges will follow.
