Two police officers rescued a pair of elderly sisters from a burning house in Huntington, Suffolk County Police said.
The officers, Peter Kieseheuer and Luigi Modica, were heading north on Park Avenue at about 4:20 p.m. Friday when they saw the sisters’ home on fire.
They forced their way in through the front door and saw one of the women lying on the floor, police said. [Trauma Code : On the Scene with Fire and Rescue]
The officers carried the woman out, but she told them her sister was still inside. They ran back in but couldn’t see through the dense smoke, police said.
After calling to the other woman and hearing her voice, they found her on the stairs and helped her to safety, police said.
The sisters, Ellamay Scott, 85, and Rosalie Simmons, 93, were treated for smoke inhalation, as were Kieseheuer and Modica, police said.
Both officers have been on the force for two years, according to Officer Lorraine Zaleski, a police spokeswoman.
