Homeless man reunited with longtime friend

Published: November 26, 2005

Everyone has a story to share, including the homeless. Sometimes we just have to listen.

On Thursday night we shared the story of a homeless man who enjoyed a Thanksgiving feast with his friends at Ala Moana Park. [Down and Out in America : The Origins of Homelessness]

During the story, Corbin Patterson picked up a guitar and lit up the screen.

Corbin Patterson is homeless, but certainly not short on friends — or talent.

A viewer instantly recognized him. Patterson was one of Hawaii’s top bass players who disappeared from the music scene 20 years ago. On Friday, the friends reunited.

Entertainer Tommy D. and Patterson were part of a popular band in the 80’s.

“This is the Big C right here, Corbin, yeah! And there he is right there,” says Tommy D.

But the Big C got involved with the wrong crowd and walked away from music. Tommy D. thought his friend was gone.

Patterson’s voice was velvet smooth.

Some things never change.

“When he was on that stage the music and the charisma and his heart just flowed out to everything and everybody — and I still see it in this rascal today,” says Tommy D.

“After all those years it’s still like it’s back then,” says Patterson.

Not bad for a guy who hasn’t touched a guitar in years.

“God blessed me with a lot of people, and this is one of them that I was blesed with, that I was blessed with this guy right here,” says Tommy D. [Friends to the End : The True Value of Friendship]

“I might start playing again, you never know. When that time comes I’ll know, and if it comes you call me because we’ll team up again and kick butt and take names yeah!” says Patterson.

The friends vow never to lose touch again.
