Published: November 24, 2005

Alie Kargbo has been waiting fifteen years for this day.

They were years spent apart from a younger brother - the last in a close knit family to flee the war torn country of Sierra Leone.

As Ibrahim Kargbo walked out of the terminal, alie yelled out his brother’s nickname. “That’s him. BBK!”

Ibrahim told us today’s emotional reunion at the Newark Liberty International Airport arrival terminal ended years of living in fear. [Three Weeks with My Brother]

Ibrahim told us, “Whenever we go back to that country, something will happen to us.”

When asked if he feared for his life in Sierra Leone, he replied, “It’s a risk for us to go back there.”

Alie added, “I feel alive once more. I was like reborn again. I’m so happy that I am able to see him again.”

Alie arrived in the states with his wife and two children 8-years ago.

Since then he’s purchased a home - raised a family, and worked with the International Rescue Committee to help more than a dozen other relatives escape the confict in sierra leone.

lang Ngan, who is the New York Regional Settlement director of the International Rescue Committee said she “called the brother and then he told me his mother is dancing!”

It’s been a long process for alie - the last of his brother’s - here in the United States, the day before Thanksgiving.

And Alie says he’s going to introduce his brother to the American tradition of turkey day. [Thanksgiving: A Time to Remember]

Alie remarked, “I will ask him if he ever had turkey. heard of a bird named turkey. Probably it’s in Africa, maybe it’s been flying around.. he’s gonna see the sizes of turkeys we have here!”
