Two teenagers had an “extraordinary” escape when their car was dragged for nearly 200yds under the wheels of an articulated lorry, police said yesterday.
The women, both 19, were travelling along the A1 southbound in a Ford Focus when they swerved to avoid a dark-coloured people carrier between junctions 46 and 47, near Walshford, outside Wetherby.
The driver, Faye Goodwin, of Stonegate, Eston, in Middlesbrough, and passenger Natalie Bones, of Dagenham Avenue, in Dagenham, Essex, were at first thought to have died in the accident at 2pm on Sunday.
But police were stunned when both were freed from the wreckage with only minor injuries. Police, who have appealed for witnesses, described the accident as “extraordinary”. [Where Miracles Happen]
A spokesman added: “The driver swerved to avoid a people carrier, spun, and went under wheels of an articulated lorry which dragged the car 170m (557ft) down the road, coming to a stop with the Focus wedged underneath.
“Expecting the worst, officers found two young women with nothing worse than whiplash injuries and bruises.”
The women were taken to Harrogate District Hospital, and released.
Police wish to trace the driver of the people carrier, which may be a Peugeot. It did stop further down the road just after the incident but then drove on.
