Rescuers have pulled a 65-year-old workman out of a trench at a construction site on the 2100 block of 19th Street, Northwest.

D.C. fire and rescue spokesman Alan Etter says the man was working at the bottom of the 15- to 20-foot-deep pit when something fell out of the wall and knocked him over.

He says a special trench-rescue detail was called to the scene to secure the ground using wood and steel braces before the man cold be removed.

Once it was safe, rescuers strapped the man to a backboard and pulled him up a ladder and into an ambulance that took him to G.W. University hospital.

Etter says the man seems to have avoided any serious injuries, but that his hip may be fractured.

He says D.C. safety regulators and Occupational Safety and Health Administration officers will investigate working conditions on the building site.
