Upstate Angel Saves Alabama Man’s Life

Published: November 19, 2005

Being told you have a deadly disease is something most of us can only imagine. But for one Alabama man, it became a reality .and took the strength of a Seneca woman to give him a new lease on life.

For more than ten years, Celeste Swafford has been listed on the Bone Marrow Registry. Then, in August of 2004, she got the call that her bone marrow was needed for a life saving procedure. “I went and had blood tests and they said they all turned out good and that we were a 6 out of 6 match which was the best possible match they can get,” says Swafford.

Swafford would be giving a liter of her bone marrow to Keith Swafford, who was diagnosed with a form of leukemia called aplastic anemia. He still remembers what doctors told him about his chances of survival, that “bone marrow transplant [was] basically my last resort.”

Now, a year after Keith’s successful bone marrow transplant, he met the woman who offered her bone marrow to give him a second chance at life. “I can’t imagine feeling more elated over anything because when we came in there and he hugged me and told me what it meant to him and he’s standing there and he’s healthy and he’s doing good … It gives you the most wonderful feeling in the world,” says Swafford.

Sasser adds, “she’s the one that saved my life along with God and it’s just very emotional for me. Thanks for everything and may God bless her and she’ll always be in my heart forever.”
