Thermal camera used to rescue lost cat

Moncton firefighters used their newest high-tech device to track down an errant cat.
The thermal imaging camera is designed to locate humans trapped in burning buildings by showing “heat signatures” in the confusing and smoky atmosphere of a fire.
The day that Moncton firefighters finished learning how to use the device, they responded to an emergency call from a resident who had lost his beloved cat.
Reg MacDonald was doing renovations on his home, and his cat Misty had been missing for two days. He was worried Misty was caught behind the drywall, so he turned to the fire department for help.
Deputy Chief Don McCabe says firefighters decided to use the thermal imaging camera to find the cat.
“We saw a small heat signature about the size of a loonie, and that was different and that’s what we’re looking for,” he said.
“We’re really trying to identify an anomaly so this was something we wanted to research and we looked at it and we told the gentleman and his wife that we had to cut a little piece of the gyproc off.”
MacDonald says Misty was waiting behind the wall. She was unhurt and hungry. “One of them cut the gyproc and, when he pulled the gyproc open, she let a couple of yells out of her and came out of there like a shot,” he said. [The Greatest Firefighter Stories Never Told]
McCabe says the rescue shows firefighters that even the tiniest victims can be helped by the new technology.
