Project Angel Tree kicks off
Published: November 16, 2005
The Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program kicked off in East Texas. It is your chance to donate holiday gifts to needy children, and a lot more families are in need this year.
More than 600 families and 2,000 children in East Texas will be depending on the generosity of others to have something to open on Christmas Day.
Capt. Mario Maldonado, of the Salvation Army, said, “Every year, we make a difference, especially in the heart of a child that may not have anything at all.” [The Real Spirit of Christmas]
The number of needy families is growing. A lot of hurricane evacuees are still in the area, and the Salvation Army fears a lot of potential donors may have already given all the help they can.
Capt. Maldonado said, “We’ll probably be affected by the donations, but I know the wonderful people of Lufkin will make it happen.”
Angel Trees were set up at Belk, Golden Corral, the Lufkin Mall, and the Wal-Mart Super Center. Capt. Maldonado says the little ones are always the first to get adopted. It is the teenagers that are usually left out.
You have until December 10th to adopt an angel. The Salvation Army is also looking for bell-ringers. If you are interested, you can call the local Salvation Army.
Angel Tree adoptions begin
Tupelo Mayor Ed Neelly and his wife, Claudia, will do some extra shopping this Christmas for a needy 2-year-old boy.
