A man in his early 20s has many people to thank for saving his life.

He was swimming near the Cocoa Beach pier Tuesday when he got caught in a rip current, WESH 2 News reported. [Dr. Beach's Survival Guide: What You Need to Know about Sharks, Rip Currents, and More Before Going in the Water]

A police officer and two surfers went in to save him, but the man might not have made it if not for Deborah Evans.

“I went in and went out and kept talking to him, told him help was on the way. I swam with him until a guy came out on a surfboard and at least he could rest. He was just giving up, he was tired, really tired,” Evans said.

Evans was the first to reach the man and held his head above water until the other rescuers jumped in to help.
