Worker rescued from hole after freak accident with vacuum

Published: November 15, 2005

The fire department had to break out block and tackle to rescue an injured man trapped in a hole along the Westpark Tollway.

Around 12:15pm Monday, a work crew was using a vacuum truck to clean out a pit that holds water that accumulates on the tollway. The worker was on a catwalk 30 feet down the 50 feet deep hole when the vacuum hose got hold of him.

Harvey Yaw with the Houston Fire Department said, “They had a vacuum truck out there sucking the dirt out of the bottom and one of the workers got his left arm caught into that suction hose. It pulled him up and dislocated his left shoulder.”

Emergency workers rigged up a harness and pulled the injured worker out and took him to the hospital. His current condition is not being made public.
