Cloned dog sitting pretty at No1

Published: November 15, 2005

SNUPPY, the world’s first cloned dog, has been declared the most amazing invention of 2005.

The seven-month-old Afghan puppy was created in a lab at Seoul National University in South Korea with the same technique used by British researchers to create Dolly the sheep in 1996.

The feat was lauded by Time magazine in recognition of the work of Professor Hwang Woo Suk and his 45-strong team. [Time Magazine]

Snuppy was just one of the major scientific steps taken by Prof Hwang this year, Time said.

Prof Hwang and his colleagues “are the world leaders at doing this”, Douglas Melton, from the Harvard Stem Cell Institute, told the magazine.
