Students’ walk-a-thon brings new police dog
Published: November 13, 2005
The K-9 units from Palm Springs, Indio and Banning police departments put on a demonstration at Cielo Vista Elementary School in Palm Spring in September. The kids were so inspired by the demonstration and the need for a new police dog at the Palm Springs Police Department that they decided to help out by organizing a walk-a-thon.
The “Walk 4 the Dog” walk-a-thon was held Oct. 21 with 100 percent participation from the students and school staff.
The original goal was to raise $500 toward the $5,000 cost of purchasing a trained police dog from Germany.
Never underestimate the power of kids: They far exceeded their goal, raising an astounding $7,000!
Of this, $5,000 will fully pay for the new police dog. The other $2,000 will go to train the police officer.
On top of all this, the kids submitted their favorite dog names to the Palm Springs Police Department, which narrowed down the list to 15. The kids voted on and chose “Nino.”
Nino will arrive in Palm Springs from Germany sometime between February and April.
The kids already feel a strong connection to Nino and are planning to purchase a bed, toys and treats as a Christmas gifts that Nino will find waiting for him when he arrives.
