Man rescues woman from house fire

Published: November 13, 2005

Chad Shepherd wants to shake the hand of the man who saved his mother’s life.

He calls him a “good Samaritan” and is sorry that they didn’t meet Wednesday night when Shepherd’s house on Portland Avenue burned.

“A man was driving by, and thought there was an awfully thick patch of fog he was driving through. Then he looked over and saw the glow from the back of our house,” Shepherd said Thursday morning.

“He stopped and knocked on our door and got my mother out.”

With all of the excitement, Shepherd never got the man’s name.

“If I was gone for 15 minutes I’d be surprised. I’d gone over to my brother’s to borrow something,” said Shepherd, who came home to find the house in flames and fire trucks and emergency vehicles there.

“When I saw the flames I didn’t care what I’d lost, I just needed to know that my mother was OK.”
