Hair salon donates cuts to charity

Published: November 13, 2005

Albert Lea’s Fantastic Sam’s employees are getting into the spirit of the holidays.

All nine stylists will be donating $2 of their daily tips toward free adult and child haircuts for Community Technologies and Services individuals.

Community Technologies and Services is an agency providing services to Freeborn County families and individuals who suffer from serious and persistent mental health issues, said Collette Turcotte, a CTS caseworker.

“These individuals are on the Federal Medical Assistance program, which means they have little assets and income yet have ongoing medical and prescription costs,” said Turcotte. “CTS works weekly with individuals developing plans for meeting the day-to-day challenges for managing their mental health symptoms.”

The stylists have been donating a portion of their tips since Nov. 1 and will continue to do so until Dec. 16. So far, they’ve raised enough money for 12 haircuts. Dec. 2 through Dec. 23, the salon will also be a drop off point for Toys for Tots.

“The girls and I decided we wanted to do something for the community, we just hadn’t decided what,” said Manager Kathy Ulrich. “Then one day I was cutting Collette’s hair and she gave me the idea. I thought it was excellent. We figured by doing this if the community or any guests wanted to donate towards a haircut we could do that as well. These families (involved with CTS) are families very much in need and what better way than to give of our talents.”

The nine Fantastic Sams stylists are: Malinda Nielsen, Shannon Schrader, Ryen Asmus, Aubree Page, Alisa Berger, Mary Szymanski, Cheryl Dreyling, Heather Larson and Ulrich. David Schultz is the owner.

“Fantastic Sams is a very family oriented place and we thought this fit in really well with that,” said Schultz. “I’m just proud of the team. Kathy came up with the idea and she inspired the rest of the team and they are running with it. As an owner I’m just sitting back and watching good things happen.
