17-Year-Old Expected To Return To Oregon
An Oregon exchange student who vanished Sunday in Brazil has reunited with her parents.
Mykensie Martin surfaced Thursday at a Salvador police station. The 17-year-old was with a young Brazilian man, identified as Marcos Alves.
Police say Alves, a local waiter, helped Martin escape from robbers. Hotel workers spotted the Martin and a young man Sunday night in Brasilia and again Monday morning.
Martin’s parents flew to Brazil before she was located. A U.S. Embassy spokesman says the family met privately Friday in Brasilia. They are all expected to return Saturday to Oregon.
“It’s not that I want to go back to the U.S. — I love Brazil. Everything was perfect. I’d rather stay here, but now that I’ve made this decision I kind of have to, you know,” Martin said through tears.
Martin’s family thanked Brazilian authorities.
