High school students raise money to make relief trip

Dave Brown cut his hair. Kassie Wright pounded the address book. Maggie McGaffigan recruited her mom. Chris Rooney might donate blood plasma.
Through a variety of methods, some more creative than others, Northwest students are trying to raise enough money to fund a relief trip to the Gulf Coast, where they will aid in Hurricane Katrina recovery efforts.
Each student needs to raise $474 by Nov. 30 to attend the trip, which is scheduled to start Dec. 18 when students pack buses and head south. They will return Dec. 23.
Even though time is drawing short, trip organizer Marnie Hade, a teacher at the high school, is confident the students will meet the fund-raising goals.
“The community response has been phenomenal,” Hade said. “I believe that our kids will be able to raise this money because the community and families have been so generous in their response so far.”
Wright, a sophomore, already has raised the required funds and received so much money from family and friends that she is helping her friend pay for the trip.
She grabbed her parents’ address book and dashed off letters to everyone listed explaining what the trip was about and what she needed. The response from 25 families, both friends and relatives, has averaged about $50 a piece.
