Thanksgiving donors to the rescue

Published: November 11, 2005

“This shouldn’t always be just around the holiday,” Bechtol said. “I wish more people would understand. People should not have to go hungry.”

Like the rescue mission, other nonprofits had been experiencing a decline in donations for the holidays compared with years past.

The Jeffco Action Center in Lakewood supplies food to needy individuals and families year round, including special holiday bags. The center’s food bank has been struggling for months to keep up with demand.

“We have far less food coming in the door” than last year, said Mag Strittmatter, director of development at the center. “We are having to go out to stores and buy groceries. We are spending hundreds of dollars on food every day to keep the shelves stocked.”

The center hopes to supply 1,500 families with Thanksgiving meals this year. “We are constantly trying to stay ahead of the curve,” Strittmatter said. “Right now the curve is on top of us.”

Panera Bread kicked off a turkey donation drive Wednesday at its metro-area stores to benefit the Food Bank of the Rockies.

The Salvation Army, which hosts a Thanksgiving Day dinner for the needy at the Colorado Convention Center, is currently collecting canned food through school drives, said Karen Herdman, a spokeswoman for the nonprofit.

“We are in full swing on all this stuff right now,” Herdman said. “It will be interesting to see how it turns out.”
