Chemistry teacher relates lessons on daily lives

Published: November 10, 2005

Brotz said teaching 80-minute classes allows him to offer students lectures and group activities in the same day.

“I try to keep the kids up and out of their seats,” he said. “I am a real storyteller.”

He said longer classroom periods allow more intensity within each lesson.

“I am able to help them more,” Brotz said.

Samantha Vivis, a sophomore, said she has fun in Brotz’s class, although chemistry is a difficult subject for her.

“I like how he walks around to see how things are going, and he helps all people,” she said. “It is a really relaxed atmosphere, and the labs are more explained than in other courses.”

Debbie Crowder said her daughter, Amanda, decided to study chemistry in college because she enjoyed learning from Brotz when she was in high school.

“Amanda really went into the science field because of Mr. Brotz,” she said.

“He works with the students as individuals and allows them to achieve their goals.”

Debbie said her daughter is back at Shippensburg University, studying chemistry and secondary education, after having served 18 months of military duty in Iraq.

“He makes students believe they can achieve anything they set out to do,” Debbie said. “He takes an interest in the students, and they know that.”

Brotz holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from California University of Pennsylvania and is working on a doctorate.

Schools Superintendent Barbara Parkins said Brotz wears many hats in the district.

“He is a very hard-working teacher, not only in the classroom, but he provides help to teachers with technology,” she said.

As the high school’s technology go-to guy, Brotz said he helps with all computer problems.

“Because he is such a highly qualified teacher, our kids really do benefit from his instruction,” Parkins said.

“All of the things he shares with what he has gone through just adds to his teaching and their learning.”
