Campbell County shooting victims called heroes
Published: November 10, 2005
The three men who were shot at Campbell County High School Tuesday are being called heroes for getting the gun away from the suspect.
“The courageous efforts of Gary and Jim and Ken saved, probably saved many other lives and lives of our students,” said Campbell County Superintendent Dr. Judy Blevins.
By all accounts, Principal Gary Seale and Assistant Principals Jim Pierce and Ken Bruce were dedicated to their students. Tuesday they showed just how much.
“I’m sure that when these men received their degrees and planned to enter into the field of education, they never dreamed they’d be put in a position of taking a bullet,” said Blevins.
District Attorney General Paul Phillips says Bartley got the gun from home. And he did not have it at school long before others found out.
“The students did exactly what they should have done, they reported it to the appropriate officials,” said Phillips.
Those officials called Bartley into the office. That is apparently when they got shot. But even after that, the students were first on their minds. They managed to get the gun away from Bartley and put the school into lockdown.
“The specific school officials that were present when this took place were heroic in the way they handled this situation,” said Phillips.
