Scientists find a cure . . worms
Published: November 8, 2005
SCIENTISTS at Edinburgh University have discovered tiny worms can trick the body’s natural defences and could hold the key to cures for illnesses and allergies.
The team found that helminth parasites can exploit an Achilles heel in our immune system, and now hope to mimic the worms’ survival tactics to beat infection.
This could lead to new treatments for a range of conditions, including diabetes, asthma and hay fever.
Professor Rick Maizels, of the university’s school of biological sciences, has been awarded £1.3 million by the Wellcome Trust to conduct the research.
Prof Maizels said: “Perhaps we can borrow a trick from parasites.”
