Three young climbers in dramatic rescue
Published: November 7, 2005
THREE young climbers were rescued from a Lakeland crag last night by a 40-strong mountain rescue team who battled for six hours against sleet, heavy rain and high winds to reach the stricken trio.
A 20-year-old man and two 19-year-old women had sent a text to other members of their group at 5pm yesterday after they became stuck on the 1,512ft Raven Crag in Borrowdale.
But their message only got through two hours later when their friends decided to try to return up the crag.
Mountain rescuers were eventually called at 9.20pm.
Twenty-two members of the Keswick team responded. They later asked 16 colleagues from the Cockermouth team to help in the rescue when it was thought two of the climbers would have to be carried off the crag.
Three members of the Keswick mountain rescue team were lowered and guided to the climbers by team members at the foot of the crag.
In the end, only one climber had to be carried down by stretcher.
The rescue was completed just before 4am today.
John Dempster, chairman of Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Team, said: “The climbers were stuck on the crag in high winds and rain – it was even sleeting early on.
“The conditions improved as we were coming down but the paths were like rivers – it was very wet under foot.”
