Rescuers Jump Off Bridge To Rescue Boy
Published: November 7, 2005
Authorities said two passers-by dove off a Tampa bridge to rescue a boy trapped in a sinking sport utility vehicle.
A tire on the SUV blew out Saturday on the Howard Frankland Bridge, causing the vehicle to flip over a barrier into the water.
Kerry Reardon of St. Petersburg saw the SUV sinking in the 9-foot-deep water and dove in.
He reached through a window of the submerged vehicle to pull 7-year-old Amar Jakupovic out of his seat belt and up to the surface.
Kelly Earle, a St. Petersburg nurse, dove off the bridge to give the boy CPR.
Other rescuers pulled the rest of the St. Petersburg family from the water.
The seven-year-old boy was taken to Tampa General Hospital, where hospital officials said he is in critical condition.
His parents and 13-year-old brother survived with minor injuries.
