Hidden Treasure Uncovered At Busch Stadium

Published: November 7, 2005

Starting Monday, two cranes and two wrecking balls will begin the demolition of Busch Stadium. They will work twenty hour days until the job is done. This means a lot of nostalgia for fans Sunday, the last night the stadium stands intact.

Crews have been working non-stop to prepare for the demolition. They’ve been ripping out seats and clearing out memorabilia. It was on a final tour that work crews made a surprising discovery hidden in a back room.

Cardinal’s representative John Lloyd says, “It was just put to the side and forgotten about.”

It was a 12 foot long mural showing black and white photos. A label says it was shipped to the old Sportsman’s Park in 1952. At the time it was insured for the sum of 6000-thousand dollars. Beyond that, the mural was a mystery. Lloyd says, “I don’t know how long it had been there. It could have been there thirty or forty years.”

We showed video of the mysterious find to the Cardinal’s hall of fame historian, Erwin Fischer. He pointed out the familiar faces, like Zach Taylor, the manager of the Browns and Billy Southworth, the manager of the Cardinals from the 1940s.

He believes the mural depicts the 1944 Cardinal’s and Brown’s World Series at a time when both teams played at Sportsman’s Park.
Fischer says, “I’m assuming this is the end of the series.”

This mural, a piece of St. Louis baseball history, was nearly lost forever.
Now that the last piece of memorabilia has been saved, the walls at Busch Stadium can come down.

Once the demolition starts, it should take 60 days to get the south half done. That’s the part that must come down for construction on the new stadium to continue. The entire thing should be down by June.
