Salvation Army’s ‘Angel Card’ brings holidays to those in need

Published: November 3, 2005

KITTANNING — The Salvation Army at 205 S. Jefferson St. is offering all an opportunity to be an angel at Christmas to at least 90 or more area families.

People can do so by picking an “Angel Card” from one of many Angel Trees to be set up at churches and businesses, buying one or more items listed on the card and donating the purchases to the Salvation Army to be forwarded to the needy.

Capts. Rod and Cindy Fowles said the Salvation Army is in need of new children’s clothing, toys and books.

“So far we will have Christmas trees with Angel Cards set up at the First United Methodist Church, St. Paul Lutheran Church and the Christian Light Book Store in Kittanning, and at the Dairy Queen along Route 422, Manor Township, the S&T Bank at Foodland, Dollar General in Kittanning, Wal-Mart and Trader Horn,” Cindy Fowles said. “Each card has several items listed, but you do not have to buy all the items. You can buy one or more and check the items off the card and put it back on the tree. Turn your items into a participating store or church by Dec. 9, or bring them to our office by Dec. 14.”

The Fowles said once the items are received, a Santa’s Workshop will be set up at the Town and Country Transit Authority garage, 220 Grant Ave., Kittanning. Families who have applied for Christmas assistance will receive a confirmation letter designating what time they should go to the workshop on Dec. 22.

“Families may receive food and each child 12 or younger will receive one or more items of clothing, toys and books,” Cindy Fowles said. “We already have more than 90 applications but we will accept additional applications between Nov. 28 and Dec. 1. Families may apply at our office along South Jefferson Street. Applicants must bring proof of income and expenses and documentation confirming their address. There are no income limitations as we consider expenses as well as income. Last year we served about 260 people, so we expect more applications to come in before the Dec. 1 deadline.”

Rod Fowles said that in addition to needing donations of gift items, the Salvation Army needs volunteers to man the Christmas Kettles that will be set up in various locations beginning Nov. 22.

“We have an ‘Adopt-A-Kettle’ program,” he said. “We have about a half-dozen groups that will man kettles but we need many more volunteers. It’s a wonderful opportunity to share this Christmas season by helping the needy among us.”
