Newark paper to print positive news only
Published: November 2, 2005
People like to ask newspaper reporters, “Why don’t you ever print any good news?” Some reporters like to answer that question with the age-old retort: “What do you expect for 50 cents?”
The Newark Weekly News, in Newark, N.J., has taken that response to an unprecedented level. The newspaper – a term used here in the broadest possible sense – recently was awarded a $100,000 no-bid contract by the Newark City Council to publish nothing but positive news about the city, according to The Associated Press.
The idea originated with the owner of the newspaper, Howard Scott. He presented the notion to the City Council, which unanimously approved the contract a few weeks ago.
Without “critical” or “investigative” reporters, Scott said, publishing only good news is the newspaper’s niche.
Most newspapers used to print a motto in their page-one nameplate. The New York Times is famous for “All The News That’s Fit To Print.” The Atlanta Journal had “Covers Dixie Like The Dew.”
If it doesn’t already have one, the Newark Weekly News should borrow its motto from TV’s Hee Haw: “May Your Pleasures Be Many, Your Troubles Be Few.”
