5yo makes miracle recovery

Published: October 31, 2005

THE father of a five-year-old boy who almost drowned in the Macintyre River at Boggabilla on Saturday afternoon yesterday praised those responsible for resuscitating his son.

Michael Connors said Daniel had been swimming in the river with friends near Toomelah Mission when he disappeared.

He said his son was under the water for 20 minutes and thought the worst when his rescuers pulled the young boy’s lifeless body from the water.

“He was dead when they pulled him out,” Mr Connors said.

“He was gone. “There was no life in him.

“Then about four to five people attempted to resuscitate him on the river bank.

“Had they not done that Daniel wouldn’t be here.”

Mr Connors said Daniel’s condition had improved remarkably and he was expected to leave Brisbane’s Mater Hospital children’s ward this afternoon.

“The doctors are surprised at how well he’s doing,” Mr Connors said.

“Having been under the water for so long we expected there to be some sort of brain damage, but he’s great.

“He’s walking, talking, playing with things.

“It’s unbelievable.”

Mr Connors said despite the frightening ordeal Daniel had been drinking water and taking showers.

“On behalf of our family we’d like to thank those who helped in resuscitating Daniel and the wonderful hospital staff for their efforts,” he said.

“He’s indicated to us that he’ll venture back in the water.

“Next time though, he’ll have constant supervision.”
