Dog praised for saving fire family

WHEN fire broke out in a Chester home, the family dog knew it spelt danger.
So, just like film and TV star Lassie, the quick-thinking pet alerted its owner to the blaze that had started in the kitchen of the home in Simpsons Way, The Dale.
A fault on the boiler had caused the blaze to break out at 3am on Tuesday.
Although the house was fitted with smoke detectors the faithful canine acted as an early warning system allowing its master to isolate the gas supply and reduce the risk of a major fire starting.
Both the owner and the dog have been praised by firefighters for their quick response. Firefighter Andy Spencer, of Chester Fire Station, said: “The dog alerted the owner to the smoke before the smoke alarms went off.
“The house was fully fitted with detectors, but I would like to praise the dog. It awoke the owner, who also acted very responsibly by isolating the gas supply and averted what could have been a much more serious fire.
“Of course, there is a more serious side to this. While we should commend the dog, animals are no substitute to smoke alarms. Dogs can leave the building and can fall asleep, so it is always important to have a smoke alarm no matter how quick-thinking and alert the dog is.”
