Miracle Baby Celebrates First Birthday After Quadruple Transplant
Published: October 26, 2005
A baby girl who wasn’t expected to survive infanthood recently celebrated her first birthday after doctors performed delicate surgery that saved her life.
Much of little Haelie Piscotto’s life has been a struggle. She was born with improper muscle development in her intestines. They were so weak, they could not move food through her body.
Few children with the same condition live past six months of age. But, against the odds, Haelie clung to life.
When she was five months old, her family made the difficult decision to put her on a list for organ donation.
After 62 days, her family got the call that doctors found a match for a four organ transplant. Hours later, she was in surgery getting a new large intestine, small intestine, pancreas, and liver.
Transplant surgeon Dr. Sam Kocoshis said, “She was given these organs so the new intestine would function normally for her and permit her to digest food properly.”
Haelie just celebrated her first birthday and she’s eating for the first time–albeit though a special tube. As she continues to get stronger every day, doctors say they are cautiously optimistic that she will pull through.
Her mom said that every day the family has with their “miracle” baby is a blessing.
