Girl donates hair for children with cancer
Published: October 26, 2005
Six-year-old Serena Jones doesn’t know much about cancer, but she is happy to donate her hair to help other children who know it too well.
The hair will be made into wigs by Locks of Love.
“It was her own idea,” said Sally Whaley, owner of Sally’s on Highway #2 at Wooler Road, where the girl’s locks were cut on October 20.
Serena’s hair will be brought to Ottawa on the weekend to be delivered personally to Locks of Love representatives. Sally Whaley said the hair conference will include a draw for prizes and they will enter Serena’s name in it.
Serena’s family gathered around while Debbie Woods cut her long hair in three sections and then gave her a stylish new cut.
“She looks great,” beamed her mother, Pam Jones. “We are so proud of her.”
Serena collected pledges for her haircut, and the salon set up a jar for donations. Together they raised $1040.75.
Matthew Del Grosso was there from the Canadian Cancer Society.
He said half the donation goes to research and half to community programs for people with cancer.
