Hospital honoring Everyday Heroes

Published: October 22, 2005

At a sold-out dinner and dance tomorrow, New Milford Hospital will honor “Everyday Heroes” in the first of what is planned to be an annual salute.

The honorees are being lauded for their dedicated service to the community through the hospital over many years.

“We have more than 700 people who come through like heroes all the time. They don’t ask for special recognition, but they deserve it,” said Richard Pugh, the president and CEO of the hospital, in a written statement. “Our hero supply runs deep.”

Each hero will receive a personalized certificate of honor. In addition, a permanent plaque will be installed at New Milford Hospital, which will be updated with new heroes each year.

This year’s honorees include a surgeon, a nurse and a nurse assistant, a paramedic, a social worker, two longtime hospital supporters and the Roxbury EMS and LifeStar teams that helped to save the life of a Roxbury boy who suffered severe head injuries when he fell from a tree.

Doug Ferkel, a paramedic and the hospital’s EMS coordinator, is being honored for his capacity to “tease positive results out of tragedy.”

Longtime hospital supporters Ruth and Skitch Henderson are being honored for the “impressive community support” and the “abundant vitality” they have brought to the hospital. Mr. Henderson is founder and music director of the New York Pops, and Mrs. Henderson operates The Silo gallery, cooking school and shop on the couple’s Hunt Hill Farm in Northville, which is now affiliated with the Smithsonian.

Described as the “quintessential registered nurse,” Patty Jacobsen is also among the honorees, as is New Milford Hospital’s chief of surgery, Dr. Ramon Mabasa, certified nursing assistant Cindy Myslow and Maureen Salerno, the hospital’s director of social work.

“Honoring Our Heroes,” which is the title of tomorrow’s event, will be hosted by Denis Leary, the creator and star of the FX TV series, “Rescue Me,” and his wife Ann, author of “An Innocent, A Broad.” The Learys are residents of Roxbury and members of the New Milford Hospital Foundation’s Young Ambassadors group. Mr. Leary is also the founder of the Leary Firefighters Foundation.

Proceeds from the dinner and dance will benefit continuing professional education for the hospital staff and Roxbury EMS. A gift will also be made to the National Nurses Organizing Committee so that a nurse can assist in Hurricane Katrina relief. The event is being held at The Club at River Oaks in Sherman.
