Four rescued from house blaze

Two men and two women have been rescued from a house fire on Deeside in north Wales.
Two people were rescued from the roof of the house in Connah’s Quay which they had managed to climb onto.
One elderly man was taken to hospital suffering from the effects of breathing in smoke.
Another man and two women were not badly injured in the blaze which broke out about 0500 BST. A discarded cigarette is thought to be the cause.
North Wales Fire Service said they were called after people in the house were awoken by a smoke alarm.
Fire crews sent to the scene were faced with a blaze in the ground floor living room, which had left the rest of the building was heavily smoke-logged.
Two of the occupants were rescued from the roof of the house in Maud Street by crews using a nine-metre ladder.
The elderly man was rescued through a first floor window using an internal rescue ladder and another person was rescued inside the house by firefighters wearing breathing apparatus.
“It is quite obvious that on arrival that the fire crews were faced with a very serious fire on the ground floor which involved the whole of the building being smoke logged,” said a spokesman for the North Wales Fire Service.
“People were trying to get out and the crews did an excellent job in safely rescuing all those involved in very difficult circumstances.”
County safety officer Alyn Edwards said that the smoke alarm system in the house had operated properly and given early warning to those inside.
“We are pretty confident that we would be possibly looking at fatalities and not successful rescues had the alarm not operated,” he said.
“I cannot stress enough the importance of working smoke alarms being fitted. In this incident, they saved four lives.”
