Man, Wallet Reunited After 40 Years

Published: October 21, 2005

Robert Gibson was passing through Pittsburgh when he and his wallet became separated.

Gibson was on Christmas leave more than four decades ago.

Gibson and his wallet were reunited Thursday night.

Once in a while things happen to us which transport us back in time, whether it is a song, a person or maybe a news event which took place.

At Pittsburgh’s old Greyhound bus station, which is now being demolished, Gibson was back in the U.S. from Germany. He was en route to West Virginia.

During a brief bus station stop, Gibson decided to shower.

He soon discovered his wallet and a couple hundred dollars were gone.

Now, 43 years later, Leroy Filmore, of Reserve Township, is getting involved.

Filmore was doing work at the old bus depot when he found Gibson’s wallet behind a bathroom wall. With the help of the military, Gibson was found living in North Carolina.

The wallet is still in good shape containing some old black and white photos of his kids.

Gibson’s driver’s license, his photo ID and his military immunization card were still there.

The money is gone.

“As they tore the wall down, this exposed the wallet,” Filmore said. So, somebody must have thrown the wallet. I don’t know how they got access back in there at that time, but, somehow, that’s where it spent 43 years.

“I guess that soap and everything over all the years kept it nice and supple,” Filmore added. “Down behind the wall, it was well protected from the elements.”

As for Gibson, news of his wallet’s discovery has him reminiscing.

“It’s quite fascinating that after all this time, it’s going to come back home to me,” Gibson said. “My boy would have been four years old at the time; my daughter was 18 months old.”

Gibson, now 70, spent 20 years in the air force. He retired in 1974.

He told KDKA’s Ralph Iannotti that he was on a two-week leave when his wallet was lost.
